Hi, friends! Happy May! I am THRILLED to be collaborating with some of my absolutely favorite bloggers for our new Weekend Warriors blogging party!! ๐ We are so excited to share a few tips and tricks with you on the last weekend of each month!
This month, we are coming at you with Mathematical May! ๐ I LOVE teaching math and I wanted to share a few things with you that I use in my classroom!
One thing that is trickkkky for my kids to master in 2nd grade is MENTAL MATH with the use of the number grid/hundreds chart! Once kiddos master those patterns of a number grid or hundreds chart, they should be ready to use a few mental math strategies to add and subtract ten more to and ten less from a given number!
Here are a few tips, tricks and ideas that we use to remember how to use the number grid to add and subtract multiples of 10.
10 MORE -THROUGH THE FLOOR!!
As a class, we chant 10 MORE – THROUGH THE FLOOR! as we point down to the floor to remember to hop straight down on the number grid to find 10 more! We also keep the anchor chart above posted and easily able to be seen in our classroom!
Then – we’re ready to add 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 more, too!
10 LESSSSS!!!!
I think that 10 more is a bit easier to master on the number grid than 10 less, so once we’ve mastered finding 10 more, we move on to finding 10 less using the chant, visual, and anchor chart below!!
We hold our index fingers up and stretch out “Tennnnnn LESS!” as we then point our fingers up to the sky hopping UP on the number grid!
When I introduce this strategy (NEVER EARLY ENOUGH!), I model with the GIANT number grid first, using fancy pointers to help us hop “through the floor” heading DOWN on the number grid, as well as hopping tennnnn LESS UP the number grid!
Then, we practice with our own number grids at our seats! You can use a variety of resources as fancy pointers (witch fingers, fancy popsicle sticks, etc) for kids to HOP up and down their individual number grids to practice together as a class!
My Hoppin’ Through the Number Grid pack includes number grids through 1,000! So, once the kiddos are familiar with the patterns on a 1-100 number grid, you can use number grids through 1,000 to practice adding (multiples of) 10 more, too! There are also practice activities included for students to practice adding and subtraction multiples of 10 independently! You can use these as assessments or as additional practice activities as needed in your classroom!
Click below to take a closer look at this set in my TPT store ๐ It also includes the anchor charts pictured above!
The number grid is always a great visual for the kiddos to use throughout the year in math, but these simple posters and chants will help their mental math gears keep turning (hopping?!) in the right direction all year long!
Lastly . . . it’s a GIVEAWAY!!! You can win TEN DOLLARS TO MY TPT STORE!! ๐ ๐ Enter the rafflecopter below to enter to win $10 worth of goodies from my store! ย Good luck and thanks so much for stopping by!
Hop over to my bloggy friends’ blogs to hear all about their marvelous math ideas that they use in their classrooms!! ๐
